10 Reasons why I wasn’t in line to buy an iPhone this morning

10. GPS - I was hoping for fully functional GPS, not some half measure.  No way will this replace a stand alone GPS unit for your vehicle

9. Data Pricing - Beyond the initial outrage, $30 for 6 gigs still isn’t that great.  Heck, they could have gone $30 for unlimited, and most people wouldn’t go close to the 6 gig limit anyways

8. 16 gigs only - I’ve got a 60 gig iPod full to the brim, and more on iTunes.  Cutting back to 16 gigs might fit my top rated songs and that’s about it - no videos or podcasts

7. Voice Pricing - Rogers voice plans (at least those from the website) are pretty pricey.  Now I’m on a corporate plan, but I don’t think they will be signing many of those with a new iPhone.

6. Telus has been good to me - I’ve been with Telus for 5 years, have never had a problem with customer service or support.  Reception and coverage has always been good too.

5. My Razr is a good phone - it does what it’s supposed to do, and it does it really well.  I replaced the battery a month ago, and everything is just as if it came out of the box.  Why replace something if it isn’t broken after all?

4. Upgrades in future - This is one of the problems when you’re a geek like me.  You buy one thing, only to have something cooler come out 12 months later.  I’ve owned 5 different iPods, and each time I replaced the earlier one with a new version for some incremental feature.  iPhone 3.0 will come out in a year or 18 months, and the cycle will repeat.

3. Signing a 3 Year Contract - I don’t want to sign a contract for 3 years on something I will want to replace down the road, especially if it still allows Rogers to increase prices whenever they want (see what telus and bell is doing on incoming text messages as an example) and it charges me a huge penalty to end my contract early.

2. Rogers Mobile - Sorry Ted, but I’ve only heard bad things about your company from the people at howardforums.  Bad customer service, bad billing, bad support, bad coverage, everything bad.  That’s really not going to make me come over to your company.

1. The Overall Cost - $200 for early cancel with telus, $299 for the 16gig, then $45 per month for a decent voice plan, $30 for a 6 gig data plain, and extras (caller ID, visual voicemail, etc).  I could easily be looking at $100 per month for a telephone bill….. what a joke.

Sure, the iPhone is cool, and it’s a fantastic piece of hardware.  As you can see, almost all of the reasons I’m not buying one is due to the service provider (Rogers), not the device itself.  If you’ve bought one, let me know your top 10 reasons why.
