The 2006 Online Video Year in Review

If you

a) live in a cave,

b) just got a computer, or,

c) have never heard of the internet

then you should go through the videos posted at the Wired News: The Year in Online Video It has all the required videos for the year including the first Lonelygirl15 video, the Ok Go treadmill music video, the Evolution of Dance video, and the always popular Mentos and Diet Coke videos.

I’m not sure that Time Magazine was right in awarding all these people with ‘person of the year awards’, but I think they were on the right track. User contributed content has changed the web, has changed the media, and has changed western culture. Web 2.0 users must be careful that corporate influence and ownership doesn’t change this. As companies slowly get on the bandwagon you get crap like the ‘All I want for christmas is a psp’ videos, paid for by Sony Corporation, pretending to be kids who want a psp. Net neutrality is the other major concern, something most people haven’t heard of and most policy makers can’t understand (it’s just a bunch of tubes right) , but if corporations like AT&T and Comcast have their way you will only get to see the internet content they approve. That is a scary future for the web. Let’s hope that things stay neutral, and that we can see another explosion of growth in the user contributed web 2.0 in 2007.

UPDATE:

If I had to choose the best of 06 it would be tough, but you can never go wrong with the Spanish Inquisition
